Mississippi Native: James "Pete" Bailey
"We are supported in every way we can imagine. That is why I am rooted here and could not imagine being anywhere else."
What does it mean to call Mississippi home? Why do people choose to leave or live in this weird, wonderful, and sometimes infuriating place? James “Pete” Bailey moved to New Albany, Mississippi, his mother’s hometown, at the age of three. While he acknowledges that there “were more opportunities for people of color” in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was born, he enjoys the easy pace of Mississippi, where he maintains strong family and community connections. Today, Pete tells us what it’s like to stay rooted in his home state.
Where are you from?
Born in St. Louis, MO.
When did you move to Mississippi and why did you move here?
My mom and I moved back to her hometown in 1964 when I was three. We moved to New Albany, MS, to take care of my grandfather who had become ill.
What does “home” mean to you? How does Mississippi fit into that definition?
To me, home means comfort. Mississippi is easy and comfortable and home. It’s perfect for my lifestyle.
